Welcome
| WELCOME TO THE GUEST SPEAKER John Coffey Democrat challenging Donnelly, Big Bearmayor in Assembly raceNewberry Springs educator launches campaign for new 33rd districtFebruary 20, 2012 5:20 PM Newberry Springs resident John Coffey wants to turn the High Desert blue. Coffey, a lifelong Democrat, is campaigning for the High Desert’s new 33rd Assembly District. So far he’s challenging two Republicans: Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, who currently represents the 45th Assembly District, and Big Bear Lake Mayor Bill Jahn. The top two vote-getters from the June primary will square off in November. “We need to have a political solution which does not include the Republican machine,” Coffey said, explaining he’s running because he believes the political system is broken in San Bernardino County. Coffey said he would push for economic development in the region, including solar projects that don’t harm the environment. He said he’d also seek to encourage commercial air service to come to Southern California Logistics Airport as an alternative to Ontario International Airport or Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport. Coffey works as a paraeducator at the Barstow Unified School District, where he has been employed since he moved to Barstow from San Diego in 1995. He said his experience at the school district showed him the value of public education. “The only thing I ever learned from an administrator is that I didn’t like them,” Coffey said. He’d push to limit administrative salaries to 15 percent of a university’s total budget. Coffey served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1977 and graduated from Western State University College of Law in 1986. He’s worked at the Social Security Administration, as a paralegal at the Department of the Navy and as a supervisor at the U.S. Census Bureau. “Up here there are fewer people who will admit to being a Democrat,” Coffey said of his potential district. But if the region had Democratic representation at the state and federal level, Coffey agued it could be more likely to avoid potential base closures and could receive more funding should President Barack Obama be reelected.
The Democratic Party is committed to keeping our nation safe and expanding opportunity for every American. That commitment is reflected in an agenda that emphasizes the strong economic growth, affordable health care for all Americans, retirement security, open, honest and accountable government, and securing our nation while protecting our civil rights and liberties. |
